We join our local guide and see famous sights such as the St. Thomas’ Church and the old trade halls. Listen to stories from times long gone by, when Leipzig was an important centre for trade, culture and publishing. Today, Leipzig is being celebrated by the media as “the new Berlin” and has been nicknamed “Hypezig”. The afternoon is free for personal sightseeing.

Friday, 23 rd August | For our full day optional excursion today we leave the city and travel to Weimar. An old city walking tour takes you to the highlights of the classical period and the places where Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland used to live. The route crosses all UNESCO World Heritage sights in the centreville. The next stop is Erfurt, the historic capital of Thuringia. It’s a storybook pretty spot, with a medieval centre set around a shallow river. The most famous street in town is the Krämerbrücke. A bit like the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, it’s an inhabited bridge, lined with colourful half-timbered buildings where people still live and work. A local guide will bring you Erfurt closer.

Saturday, 24 th August | Our full day optional excursion take us first to Moritzburg, famous for its striking palace. Boasting an impressive park featuring numerous sculptures, as well as an amazing interior, the Moritzburg Palace is a sight not to be missed. We learn more about the history of this beautiful building on a guided tour with audio guide. Later we board the coach and head to Meissen, home of the famous Meissen Porcelain, dating back to 1710, where we have a short guided tour through the factory’s demonstration workshops.

Sunday, 25 th August | Another full day optional excursion today take us to W¨orlitz, where we enjoy a guided tour through the park. The W¨orlitz Park is composed of 5 garden sections dissected by lakes and canals to be connected again through ferries, bridges, footpaths, and visual connections. Later we proceed to Wittenberg. We experience the historic city centre with its Schlosskirche (Castle Church) and the famous door where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses. Visit the Luther house (extra). The permanent exhibition at the Luther House offers you an encounter with the time of the Reformation. Approximately 1,000 original exhibits not only tell the life and work of the reformer Luther, but also his family life and his influence on history.

Monday, 26 th August | Today, with our local guide we head to Dresden and experience this ‘Florence on the Elbe’. Take in Canaletto’s classical view of the spires, towers and domes of the baroque city from the northern banks of the Elbe. We continue across the river to the Old Town for a guided walking tour. Completely wiped out by Allied bombings in 1945, Dresden has since been meticulously restored and rebuilt back to its former glory. See the beautiful Church of Our Lady, the Semperopera and the incredible Zwinger complex, going back to the days of the Saxon prince-elector August the Strong.

Tuesday, 27 th August | After breakfast we go for our full day optional excursion to visit the Panometer. The Leipzig Panometer is a converted gasometer in the district of Leipzig-Connewitz. As the first ‘Panometer turned into gallery’ it was opened by artist Yadegar Asisi in 2003. The 1:1 scale panorama consists of printed slices, each three metres wide and 32 metres long, combined to form one overwhelming single image. To give the Panometer visitors a perfect bird’s- eye view, the viewing platform was extended to a new height of 15 metres. Later free time is given to exploring exciting Leipzig. There are a lot of things to see. Visit a museum, a church, go shopping or enjoy a walk in one of the parks.

Wednesday, 28 th August | After check-out we board our coach once again to have a last optional full day excursion visiting Jena. Here you will visit the second-oldest botanical garden in Germany. Covering a total of 4.5 hectares, the outdoor spaces and tropical glasshouses are home to some 10,000 plants from every climate zone on Earth. Afterwards you will have time to visit the city center on your own. After returning to the hotel for our luggage we make our way to Leipzig Airport for our Air Malta flight departing at 9.55pm and arriving in Malta at 12.55am (early Thursday 25th July).
